Adam released her hand and stood studying her critically. “If I were directing this movie, my dear, I’d send you back to makeup.”

Her hand involuntarily went to her cheek. “What did I do wrong?”

“No mistakes, if that’s what you mean.” He touched her skin with his fingertips. “I’m not sure how fierce an impression you make. Angels, as the saying goes, aren’t very intimidating.”

Judy saw the point and smiled serenely. “You don’t have to be an eight-hundred pound gorilla to protect someone. You simply have to know what you’re doing.”

Tina had wandered over to where they stood. Judy smiled down at her and stroked her head, which now sported a single short braid…clearly in imitation of Judy’s.

“We were reading a story, waiting for our drinks until you arrived,” Adam said. “What can I fix you?”

“How about some mineral water?”

His lip twitched. “Mmm. A racy devil, I see. Do you ever kick back?”

“Not while I’m on duty. And, for the next three days anyway.”

“Judy, your dedication is commendable,” he replied. He went to a mirrored cabinet against one wall, which contained a hidden bar.

As he fixed the three of them something to drink. Adam watched her in the mirror. Judy was, if anything, even more attractive than at the pool. He liked the way she’d twisted her hair up on her head.

But despite her appeal, he found himself at a bit of a loss as to how to take her. He wasn’t in the habit of feeling off balance around women, though he doubted she’d noticed the effect she’d had on him.

Adam liked women, and had always felt comfortable around them. He could ‘speak their language’ as a lady friend of his once put it.

Tina had taken Judy’s hand and was beaming up at her. “See my hair?”

“Yes, I was noticing how pretty it looks,” he heard her reply. “Did you do that yourself?”

His daughter giggled. “No, Jean did. It’s like yours was!”

Judy tweaked the little girl’s nose. “We could almost be twins, couldn’t we?”

By the time he had finished preparing the drinks, Tina had taken Judy by the hand and led her to the couch. Hew joined them, serving the drinks. His daughter was chatting away, so he sat back and listened to the conversation.

They each toyed with their glasses, sitting silently, the tension between them growing. Judy leaned forward and put her glass on the coffee table. When she sat back, she scooted a few inches closer to him.

Adam moved closer to her. He casually took her hand, as though he had earned the right. The affection was restrained in the presence of his little girl, he lightened the moment with a smile.

Judy felt the tremor his touch produced work its way down her spine. Their eyes met, and his look took a giant step beyond what he’d said during their conversation. In the course of just a few minutes, she’d gone from feeling guarded to actually feeling passionate toward him. She wasn’t sure what he would do next, but before he had a chance to say anything more, Tina appeared in the doorway.
